ChEESE Project Showcased at EuroHPC User Days 2025 in Copenhagen

The ChEESE team demonstrated how Europe’s supercomputers are being applied to address geohazard challenges. At their booth, participants discovered how high-performance computing can strengthen preparedness and response to natural hazards.

The ChEESE project took part in the EuroHPC User Days in Copenhagen on 30 September and 1 October 2025, an event designed to connect Europe’s supercomputing users with the services, resources, and projects supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). Organised together with EuroCC Denmark and the Danish e-Infrastructure Consortium, the event gathered researchers, service providers, and Centres of Excellence to exchange knowledge and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The objective of the EuroHPC User Days is to showcase EuroHPC projects that have used European HPC supercomputing resources, share best practices, gather feedback from EuroHPC users and engage with potential new users. The event also provides supercomputing users with the chance to explore new topics and strengthen their understanding of the opportunities made available by the EuroHPC JU and the support mechanisms in place.

At the heart of the event was an active exchange between the EuroHPC Centres of Excellence, where projects such as ChEESE had the opportunity to showcase their latest developments. The ChEESE team welcomed visitors to its booth, presenting how the project is harnessing HPC technologies to improve preparedness and rapid response to natural hazards such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and other geophysical threats.

ChEESE was in great company, alongside other Centres of Excellence such as ESiWACE3, POP, CASTIEL 2, MaX3, and others. The ChEESE team, represented by Aerton Guimarães (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – BSC, innovation manager and dissemination officer) and Giorgio Amati (CINECA, researcher), had the opportunity to interact with students, startups, researchers from different institutions, and EuroHPC JU representatives. discussing the project’s impact and its relevance for both the solid Earth community and society at large.

This third edition of the EuroHPC User Days featured User Forum panels on governance and user perspectives, alongside parallel sessions highlighting state-of-the-art research in Earth System Sciences, Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Engineering, High Energy Physics, and Artificial Intelligence for Science. Close to 300 participants joined onsite, with many more online, contributing to discussions on EuroHPC infrastructure updates, access mechanisms, and new services such as the AI Factories.

The EuroHPC User Days underscored the importance of cooperation between researchers, service providers, and funding bodies in shaping Europe’s leadership in supercomputing. For ChEESE, it was not only a chance to present its services, but also to contribute to the dialogue on how HPC can directly benefit society by enhancing resilience to natural hazards.
