The ChEESE Centre of Excellence joined scientists, policymakers, and first responders at the EU Science for Preparedness Conference (Turin, 4-6 November 2025) to showcase how supercomputing is supporting Europe’s preparedness for natural hazards.
Throughout a poster exhibition, ChEESE presented it’s codes and services, offering a glimpse into how the project is bringing exascale computing to the world of Solid Earth.
From modelling earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes to simulatin glacier hazards, ChEESE is advancing 11 open-source flagship codes to perform on Europe’s most powerful pre-exascale systems – Leonardo, LUMI, and MareNostrum 5. These tools underpin new Urgent Computing services, designed to provide faster, data-driven decision support during emergencies.
Recent examples include simulations that supported authorities during the La Palma and Reykjanes eruptions, volcanic hazard assessments for Campi Flegrei, and faster-than-real-time tsunami forecasts now used by the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). In September 2025, ChEESE also collaborated with the Mexican National Seismological Service to test its earthquake urgent computing service during the National Seismic Drill, marking 40 years since the devastating 1985 Michoacán earthquake.

The conference was also a great opportunity to connect with professionals from across Europe and beyond, and to learn from projects addressing preparedness from multiple perspectives, from those targeting the scientific community to initiatives focused on citizens and public engagement.

During the conference, discussions highlighted how innovation, AI, and risk modelling are transforming Europe’s disaster preparedness. From early warning systems and multi-hazard assessments to capacity building, Copernicus, and HPC-enabled emergency response, the event underscored the importance of collaboration and shared strategies to build a safer, more resilient Europe.
