The Work Package Leaders of the ChEESE Centre of Excellence (ChEESE CoE) gathered in Luxembourg to take part in the project’s second Review Meeting with the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) evaluation committee. The session showcased the project’s scientific and technical progress, while underlining the growing impact of ChEESE across the solid Earth community. The meeting took place on Thursday, 25 September.
During the session, the team showcased the project’s progress, underlined the technical advances achieved in its workflows, and discussed the impact that ChEESE is already generating across science and society. The feedback received from the evaluators was highly valuable and will help guide the project’s next steps.

ChEESE CoE is the European Centre of Excellence for Exascale in Solid Earth, working to become a hub for High-Performance Computing (HPC) software within the solid Earth community. The project addresses the multiple challenges posed by geohazards and the need for accurate predictions, harnessing the unprecedented power of exascale computers.
Among its main objectives, ChEESE aims to:
- Computational Challenges: prepare 11 community flagship codes to tackle 12 domain-specific exascale Computational Challenges.
- Pilot Demonstrators: develop a new generation of 9 Pilot Demonstrators for scientific problems that demand exascale computing.
- Simulation Cases: apply these Pilot Demonstrators in Simulation Cases of high scientific, social, or urgent relevance.
The Review Meeting in Luxembourg was joined in person by:
- Arnau Folch (GEO3BCN-CSIC), ChEESE Coordinator
- María José García (GEO3BCN-CSIC), WP1 Leader: Project Management
- Piero Lanucara (CINECA), WP2 Leader: Exascale technical challenges in flagship codes
- Erwan Raffin (Eviden), WP3 Leader: Co-design with European HPC vendors and technologies
- Christoph Niethammer (HLRS), WP4 Leader: Simulation ecosystem
- Vadim Monteiller (CNRS), WP5 Leader: Farming Pilot Demonstrators
- Tomaso Esposti Ongaro (INGV), WP6 Leader: Simulation Cases and service enabling using EuroHPC infrastructures
- Aerton Guimarães (BSC), WP7 Leader: Dissemination, outreach, and capacity building
