Tandem

Tandem is a scalable discontinuous Galerkin code designed to simulate earthquakes and aseismic slip on complex, unstructured 3D grids. It uses the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPG) method to represent the complex geometries and heterogeneous properties of the Earth’s subsurface.

The code can simulate sequences of earthquakes and the periods of slow, aseismic deformation between them. It captures the full earthquake cycle, from slow tectonic loading and earthquake nucleation to rupture propagation and termination, over time scales ranging from milliseconds to thousands of years.

By bringing all these processes together in a single, self-consistent framework, Tandem enables large-scale 3D simulations of earthquake cycles at unprecedented levels of detail.
