Workshop Overview

This two-day workshop focuses on the SPECFEM code, a cutting-edge software suite based on the spectral-element method in the time domain. Participants will gain insights into the capabilities of both SPECFEM2D and SPECFEM3D for simulating wave propagation in diverse applications, including seismology and underwater acoustics.

Key Highlights:

  • Fundamentals of downloading, configuring, and executing the code.
  • Meshing and parameterization for domains of interest.
  • Practical guidance on running simulations on high-performance computing systems.
  • Real-world case studies and hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

This workshop is designed for researchers seeking to expand their expertise in numerical wave propagation modeling and leverage HPC for their studies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the theoretical and practical aspects of the SPECFEM software suite.
  • Learn to implement and run full-wave simulations in 2D and 3D.
  • Develop the skills to effectively utilize HPC resources for large-scale simulations.

Prerequisites

  • Participants are required to bring their own laptops (a high-performance system is not necessary).

Expert Instructors

The workshop will be led by renowned experts with extensive experience in SPECFEM development and applications:

  • Paul Cristini (CNRS-LMA): Specialist in underwater acoustics and seismo-acoustics, with over 15 years of experience using SPECFEM2D.
  • Maxence Ferrari (CNRS-LMA): Developer of a new SPECFEM version using Kokkos, focusing on HPC advancements within the ChEESE-2P project.
  • Vadim Monteiller (CNRS-LMA): Expert in SPECFEM3D with over a decade of experience in full waveform inversion and HPC optimization for large-scale simulations.

Practical Information

Accommodation: We recommend staying in central Nantes (areas such as Château, Bouffay, Graslin, or 50 Otages), which offers easy access to the Science Campus via Tramway Line 2 (10 minutes by tram or 30 minutes on foot).
