Tasks
Task 6.1: Setup of Simulation Cases and Trials (Lead: INGV)
This task will define the methodology and precise setup for the production runs, including collaboration with T1.4 for preparation of EuroHPC/PRACE access calls. It will also define how to test their solutions from a scientific point of view and to verify that they satisfy the interest of end-users.
Task 6.2: Exascale capability simulation cases and Scientific Grand Challenges (Lead: CNRS/LMU)
This task will run the 6 capability SCs. Among these, the target is to configure 4 of the SCs as Scientific Grand Challenges, i.e. as large-scale pre-exascale executions. However, production of SGCs will depend on the success in obtaining extreme-scale computational resources.
The following SCs will be addressed:
- (SC1.1) (Lead: CNRS, potential SGC, code: SPECFEM3D) Anthropogenic noise and seismicity, wave propagation at higher frequencies in Rade d'Hyères to obtain simulation results up to 100Hz;
- (SC2.1) (Lead: INGV, potential SGC, code: SPECFEM3D) Seismic tomography of the Adriatic-Ionian region to obtain full wave seismic anisotropic tomography of the Adriatic-Ionian lithosphere at 5 km resolution;
- (SC4.1) (Lead: NGI, potential SGC) Multi-source local high-resolution scenario with emphasis in the 2022 Tonga case for a high resolution coupling of flagship codes for acoustic pressure waves and seismic rupture (SeisSol), landslides (HySEA or ExaHype), and coupled far field tsunami propagation forced by atmospheric pressure waves (HySEA);
- (SC6.1) (Lead: INGV, code: OpenPDAC) Urgent high-resolution, 3D multiphase flow simulation of phreatic eruptions at Vulcano achieving a spatial resolution at ground in the metric range;
- (SC8.1) (Lead UM, potential SGC, code: LaMEM) Magmatic systems and induced landslides: the Etna case with a spatial resolution of around 50 meters to resolve the major faults;
- (SC8.2) (Lead: CNRS, code: pTatin3D) 3D evolution of tectonic deformation and rheology as driver of seismic hazard in the Hellenic arc to simulate the evolution of the tectonic structure of the upper plate of the Hellenic subduction zone in response to subduction dynamics from 35 Ma to the present day with a 1 km spatial resolution.
Task 6.3: Exascale capacity simulation cases (Lead: INGV)
This task will run the 9 capacity SCs as ensemble workloads (not needing tight interconnection between runs) that integrate scalable multi-physics/multi-domain models for UC and natural hazard assessment.
The following SCs will be addressed:
- (SC1.2) (Lead: LMU, code: Tandem, SeisSol, pTatin3D, SPECFEM) Next generation of earthquake simulators for the Hellenic arc and Iceland to perform hundreds of dynamic rupture earthquake and slip simulations across many cycles of earthquake sequences at the Hellenic Arc and the Southwest Iceland transform zone;
- (SC1.3) (Lead: LMU, code: SeisSol) Physics-based PSHA and urgent UQ for Iceland for short-term earthquake scenario modeling and ground motion simulations;
- (SC3.1) (Lead: INGV, code: HySEA) The Global Tsunami Hazard Map built upon 100,000 unit sources carried out on regional to global grids with resolutions of at least 30 arcseconds;
- (SC5.1) (Lead: INGV, code: FALL3D) The European tephra hazard map at a resolution of less than 10 km for European scale and 2 km at regional scale;
- (SC5.2) (Lead: CSIC, code: FALL3D) Volcanic gas dispersal at local scale: a reanalysis of the 2021 La Palma case at 1-2 km resolution making use of different observations available for tuning and verifying the model performance;
- (SC6.2) Long-term probabilistic hazard maps for phreatic eruptions at Vulcano island (Lead: INGV, code: OpenPDAC) considering hundreds to thousands ensemble of uncorrelated high-resolution, 3D numerical simulations of phreatic eruptions at Vulcano;
- (SC7.1) (Lead: CNRS, code: xSHELLS) MHD turbulence closure models in planetary cores using AI to obtain a catalog of time series and time-dependent 2D maps of the field and flow at the core surface;
- (SC9.1) (Lead: CSC, code: Elmer/Ice) Eastern Skaftá Cauldron GLOF simulation, Iceland with an estimated horizontal resolution of around 10 m;
- (SC9.2) (Lead: CNRS, code: Elmer/Ice) Calving glacier hazard in Greenland to quantify the hazard related to iceberg calving near the Bowdoin glacier in terms of generated water waves, sea ice cover and ocean layers perturbation.
Task 6.4: EuroHPC urgent computing service enabling (Lead: BSC)
This task will enable 4 UC services on target tier-0 EuroHPC pre-exascale architectures (Leonardo, LUMI, MN5) for an emergency access mode. Based on SCs 1.3, 4.1, 5.2, and 6.1, configurations for optimal time-to-solution will be considered and their usefulness for response scenarios evaluated. This will be done in collaboration with IUB members and exemplified by means of exercises. At the same time, a strong focus will be put on the enablement and technical requirements for an EU-level urgent access to HPC resources, including collaboration with the EuroHPC Infrastructure Advisory Group (INFRAG) for UC service certification, deployment, and access (Working Group).
SubTask 6.4.1: Interface for interactive computing (Lead: E4 Analytics)
This subTask will test the usability of an e-infrastructure for interactive computing to ease the implementation and execution of workflows in Urgent Computing exercises, targeting EuroHPC systems like CINECA Leonardo. The infrastructure will allow users to launch HPC workflows from a web interface, providing additional tools for pre- and post-processing and communication of the results. If successful, the developed tools can be applicable to all ChEESE-2P workflows. As application cases, this tool will be tested for 2 Simulation Cases (SC), which are SC5.2 (Volcanic dispersal at local scale: a reanalysis of the 2021 La Palma case) and SC6.1 (Urgent high-resolution, 3D multiphase flow simulation of phreatic eruptions at Vulcano). A Deliverable on the SCs report on the use of the interface for interactive computing associated with the activities of ST6.4.1, will be led by E4 Analytics and delivered at M46.
